I secretly added laxatives to my husband’s morning coffee before …

“Where is Brad?” “He went out.” “Out where?” I hesitated. “To a business meeting.” Margaret gave a bitter laugh. “Still telling that story, is he?” My stomach tightened. “What does that mean?” She stepped inside without waiting for an invitation. Then she noticed the pharmacy bag on the floor. Her expression changed. “Oh, God,” she whispered. I picked it up. “Why is my name written on this?” Margaret looked at me with tears gathering in her eyes. “Because Brad was supposed to give it to you this morning.” I opened the bag. Inside was a medical report, a prescription, and a small envelope. My hands began shaking. The report had my full name printed at the top. But the diagnosis belonged to Brad. I read it once. Then again. I couldn’t understand the words.

May be an image of coffee cup

Finally, Margaret spoke. “Your husband has been seriously ill for months.” I stared at her. “What?” “He was diagnosed with an advanced heart condition. The doctors warned him that he needed treatment immediately.” I shook my head. “No. That’s impossible. He’s been going to work every day.” “He’s been pretending everything is normal.” I looked down at the report. There were hospital dates. Specialist appointments. Medication instructions. And a note from a doctor recommending further testing. “Why would he put my name on this?”

Margaret lowered herself onto the sofa. “Because he wanted you to believe the appointment was for you. He was afraid you’d refuse to come if you knew the truth.” I felt suddenly cold. “Why would he be afraid of telling me?” She didn’t answer immediately. Instead, she opened her handbag and removed another envelope. Inside was a photograph. Brad was sitting in a hospital bed. His face looked thinner. His eyes were tired. He was holding a small piece of paper. On it, someone had written:

I want to see my wife one more time.

I nearly dropped the photograph.

Then my eyes returned to Brad’s phone.

Chloe’s message was still visible.

“I did exactly what you asked me to do. Now you have to tell your wife the truth.”

I looked at Margaret.

“What does Chloe have to do with this?”

Margaret wiped her eyes.

“Chloe isn’t just his secretary.”

“Then who is she?”

“She’s his daughter.”

The room seemed to tilt.

I sat down.

Brad had never mentioned having a daughter.

Not once.

Margaret took a deep breath.

“Before he married you, Brad had a relationship with a woman named Elaine. They had a child together. When the relationship ended, he lost contact with them. Chloe found him several months ago.”

I couldn’t speak.

“She came looking for her father,” Margaret continued. “And when she discovered how sick he was, she decided to help him.”

I remembered Chloe’s smile.

Her perfume.

The message about the cologne.

My voice trembled.

“Then why did she tell him to wear that fragrance?”

Margaret looked at me sadly.

“Because Elaine used to love that smell. Chloe told him it might make him feel like himself again.”

I covered my mouth.

Everything I’d believed was beginning to collapse.

But one question remained.

“Why did I find messages about a hotel?”

Margaret looked toward the window.

“Because Brad was planning to meet Chloe there. He wanted to tell her something before he told you.”

“What?”

Margaret stood.

“That question needs to be answered by Brad himself.”

Then she looked at the empty coffee mug on the kitchen counter.

“Did he drink his coffee?”

My heart stopped.

“Yes.”

“Everything?”

I nodded.

Margaret closed her eyes.

“Then we need to find him. Now.”

PART 2: THE MESSAGE THAT CHANGED EVERYTHING

I grabbed my coat and followed Margaret outside.

Before we reached the car, my phone rang.

Unknown number.

I answered.

“Hello?”

A woman’s voice came through.

“Is this Mrs. Brad?”

“Who is this?”

“My name is Chloe.”

My knees almost gave way.

“Where is my husband?”

There was a long silence.

Then Chloe began crying.

“He’s at the hospital.”

I couldn’t breathe.

“What happened?”

“He collapsed outside the hotel. Someone called an ambulance.”

I looked at Margaret.

She immediately took the phone from my hand and asked for the hospital name.

Chloe gave it to her.

Then she said something that made my blood run cold.

“He told me you might be angry when you found out. But he never thought you’d actually hurt him.”

I closed my eyes.

The coffee.

The little bottle.

My revenge.

Suddenly, it wasn’t a private act of satisfaction anymore.

It was something much darker.

“Did he tell you what happened?” I whispered.

Chloe hesitated.

“He told me his wife had been acting strangely. He said he was worried about you.”

I wanted to defend myself.

I wanted to explain the affair, the lies, the months of loneliness.

But I couldn’t.

Because I had done something dangerous.

And I had no idea what it might have caused.

“Is he conscious?” I asked.

“For a few minutes, yes. He kept asking for you.”

I began crying.

“Tell him I’m coming.”

Chloe’s voice softened.

“There’s something else you should know.”

“What?”

“He wasn’t meeting me to have an affair.”

I stopped walking.

“What are you talking about?”

“He was meeting me because I found something in his medical records. Something he hadn’t told you.”

I looked at Margaret.

She seemed to know exactly what Chloe was about to say.

“Your husband has been trying to arrange a medical procedure,” Chloe continued. “But he kept delaying it.”

“Why?”

“Because he wanted to settle something first.”

“What thing?”

Chloe took a shaky breath.

“He wanted to give you the house.”

I couldn’t understand.

“The house?”

“He changed the ownership documents. He wanted to make sure you would have somewhere to live if his condition got worse.”

My tears fell faster.

Then Chloe added:

“And he wanted to tell you that the woman you thought he was cheating with was actually helping him prepare something for you.”

I gripped the phone.

“What?”

“Please come to the hospital. I’ll explain everything there.”

The call ended.

For several seconds, I stood motionless.

Then Margaret touched my arm.

“Let’s go.”

During the drive, I stared out of the window.

I kept remembering the small things.

Brad forgetting our anniversary.

Brad sleeping on the sofa.

Brad leaving early.

Brad hiding his phone.

I had interpreted every silence as rejection.

Every absence as betrayal.

And perhaps some of those things really were lies.

But I had never imagined the possibility that he was hiding something else.

When we arrived at the hospital, Chloe was waiting outside the emergency department.

She looked younger than I expected.

Her eyes were red.

She held a folder against her chest.

“Where is he?” I asked.

“Doctors are treating him.”

“Is he going to be okay?”

She didn’t answer.

Instead, she handed me the folder.

Inside were documents, photographs, and several handwritten letters.

The first letter was addressed to me.

I recognized Brad’s handwriting immediately.

I opened it.

My love,

If you’re reading this, it means I failed to find the courage to tell you everything myself.

I know I’ve been distant. I know I’ve hurt you. And I know that no explanation can erase the loneliness I’ve caused you.

But there is something I need you to understand.

I never stopped loving you.

I couldn’t continue.

My vision blurred.

Chloe gently touched my shoulder.

“There’s more.”

I turned the page.

The reason I’ve been meeting Chloe is because she found me after all these years. I didn’t know how to tell you I had a daughter.

I was ashamed of the past I never explained.

I was also afraid that if I told you about my illness, you’d spend every remaining moment worrying about me.

I wanted to make sure you would be financially secure.

I wanted to leave you the home we built together.

And I wanted one more chance to take you somewhere beautiful, without hospital appointments or doctors waiting for us.

I stopped reading.

“Was he really cheating?” I asked Chloe.

She looked directly into my eyes.

“No.”

“Then why did I see those messages?”

“Because he was asking me to help arrange a surprise for you. The hotel was where he planned to meet you after I brought the documents.”

I looked at the final photograph in the folder.

It showed a seaside hotel room.

Two chairs facing the ocean.

A bouquet of white flowers.

And a small card.

For the woman I should have appreciated every day.

I began sobbing.

Then a doctor came through the doors.

“Family of Brad?”

We all stood.

“I’m his wife,” I said.

The doctor looked at me carefully.

“Your husband is receiving treatment. He’s stable at the moment, but his condition is serious.”

I wanted to ask a hundred questions.

Instead, I managed one.

“Can I see him?”

The doctor nodded.

“Briefly.”

And as I followed him down the corridor, I realized I had no idea what I would say when I saw my husband again.
