He looked at me. “Nothing.” “That’s not true.” He moved closer. “Victoria, listen to me.” “No.” “Please.” “No more lies.” His eyes filled with something I hadn’t expected. Fear. Real fear. Not fear of prison. Not fear of losing his reputation. Something deeper. He glanced toward Serena. Then whispered: “They know.” My blood ran cold. “Who?” He didn’t answer. “Who knows?” He looked at the windows. “They’ve been watching you.” “Who?” “Victoria—” “Who?” His voice dropped to almost nothing. “The people your father was investigating.” Before I could respond, every light in the house went out. “Stay back!” the officer yelled. But I knew that sound. Someone was running toward the back door. Another crash. Glass breaking. Then silence. The officers rushed through the house. I stood frozen in the dark. Dennis grabbed my arm. I ripped it away. “Don’t touch me.” “I was trying to protect you.” “From what?” He didn’t answer. A flashlight beam swept across the kitchen. The officer came back. “Back door’s open.” I looked toward it. Cold night air moved through the broken window. Then I noticed something on the floor. A muddy boot print. Large. Fresh. Beside it was a small scrap of brown canvas. I picked it up before anyone could stop me. The fabric matched my father’s jacket. But there was something stitched into the inside. Three red threads forming a symbol.
