Then her eyes landed on the black coffee mug sitting beside the sink. “Did he drink it?” I stiffened. “What?” “The coffee.” My stomach tightened. “How do you know about the coffee?” Chloe looked at me with an expression I couldn’t understand. Fear. Not guilt. Fear. “I told you,” she whispered. “I already did what he asked.” “What did he ask you to do?” She placed the envelope on the kitchen table. “He asked me to help him leave you.” The words hit harder than I expected. I laughed once. Not because anything was funny. Because sometimes your body doesn’t know what else to do with pain. “Leave me?”

“He said he wanted a divorce.” I stared at her. “Brad told you that?” “He told me he was going to tell you today.” Today. The word echoed in my head. The hotel. The cologne. The blue shirt. Everything suddenly looked different. “He wasn’t going to a meeting,” I said. “No.” “He was meeting you.” “Yes.” “And he was going to tell me he wanted a divorce.” Chloe nodded. Then she whispered, “But that isn’t why I came.” I looked at the envelope. “What is that?” She didn’t answer immediately. Instead, she asked, “Have you ever seen your husband’s medical records?” I felt a chill crawl up my arms. “No.” “Then you should.” She pushed the envelope toward me. My fingers trembled as I opened it. The first page was a hospital report. The name at the top was Brad’s.
