PART 2-My husband forgot to turn off the video call, and 30 employees watched his assistant sitting on his lap, wearing the $110,000 necklace he had …

PART 4 — THE HUSBAND I NEVER KNEW

The next morning, I did something Gavin never expected. I went to Summit Crest Group. Not as his wife. Not as the woman everyone thought had disappeared from the business world. I entered the building as Nora Whitmore, majority shareholder. The receptionist looked surprised. “Mrs. Prescott?” I smiled politely. “Actually, it’s Ms. Whitmore.” The change was small. But it felt powerful. Within ten minutes, executives were rushing around. Within twenty minutes, the board members were informed. Within thirty minutes, Gavin received the message. I was there. When Gavin entered the conference room, he froze.

May be an image of one or more people, suit and text

The expression on his face was unforgettable. For the first time, he looked powerless. “Nora?” I sat at the head of the table. A position he had always believed belonged to him. “Good morning, Gavin.” He stared at the directors around him. “What is this?” One of the attorneys placed a folder in front of him. “Mr. Prescott, Ms. Whitmore has requested a full review of corporate governance, financial transactions, and executive relationships.” His face changed. “You can’t do this.” I looked directly at him. “Actually, I can.” “You don’t understand the company.” I almost smiled. “That is exactly what you wanted everyone to believe.” His jaw tightened. “You’re my wife.” “No.”

My voice remained calm.

“I was your wife.”

The room went silent.

Gavin lowered his voice.

“Can we talk privately?”

“No.”

I looked at everyone.

“Everything between us has been private for too long.”

The meeting lasted three hours.

And by the end, Gavin’s carefully built world had started falling apart.

The necklace.

The payments.

The apartment.

The secret accounts.

The transfers.

Everything.

But there was one thing I still didn’t understand.

Why Mia?

Why did the report mention my daughter?

That question haunted me.

Until that evening.

When I received another message.

This time from a woman.

Not Evelyn.

Not an unknown number.

The name appeared on the screen.

Elizabeth Prescott.

Gavin’s mother.

The message contained only one sentence.

“I owe your father a debt I can never repay.”

Attached was an address.

I went there alone.

Elizabeth lived in a quiet neighborhood far away from the city.

When she opened the door, she looked older than I expected.

Tired.

Broken.

But honest.

“Nora.”

She knew exactly who I was.

“You know me?”

“I have known about you for years.”

I stepped inside.

“Then tell me the truth.”

She sat down.

“My son did terrible things.”

I waited.

“But not everything he did was because he was evil.”

I frowned.

“Then why?”

She looked at me with tears in her eyes.

“Because he spent his entire life believing he was unwanted.”

I said nothing.

“Gavin was adopted.”

I already knew that.

But then she continued.

“His biological father was involved in the fraud scandal. Your father helped expose him.”

I understood.

“He hated my father.”

“Yes.”

Elizabeth looked down.

“But he also hated himself.”

The room felt heavy.

“Then why marry me?”

“Because he thought your father took everything from him.”

I whispered:

“He married me for revenge.”

Elizabeth nodded.

“But something happened.”

“What?”

“He fell in love with you.”

I almost laughed.

“No.”

“He did.”

She looked at me.

“His mistake was that he loved you and hated himself at the same time.”

I remembered Gavin’s face.

His anger.

His fear.

His desperation.

For the first time, I wondered if the monster I saw was also a man trapped by his own choices.

But then Elizabeth said:

“There is one more thing.”

I looked at her.

“Mia.”

My heart stopped.

“What about Mia?”

Elizabeth reached for a folder.

“Your father discovered something before he died.”

Inside was a DNA report.

I stared at it.

The name at the top was Mia Prescott.

And the result was impossible.

Gavin was not Mia’s biological father.

PART 5 — THE DAUGHTER WHO CONNECTED TWO FAMILIES

I drove home without remembering the journey.

The world outside the car windows blurred.

The buildings.

The streets.

The people.

Everything felt unreal.

Mia was asleep when I entered the house.

She looked so peaceful.

So innocent.

I sat beside her bed for hours.

Trying to understand.

Trying to breathe.

The next morning, I confronted Gavin.

I placed the DNA report on the table.

He didn’t look surprised.

That hurt more than anything.

“You knew.”

He closed his eyes.

“Yes.”

My voice broke.

“How long?”

“Since before she was born.”

I stepped back.

“You let me believe…”

“I wanted to tell you.”

“But you didn’t.”

“No.”

“Why?”

His answer was quiet.

“Because I was afraid.”

I laughed bitterly.

“You were afraid?”

“Yes.”

He looked at me.

“The truth was complicated.”

“Try me.”

He sat down.

“Mia’s biological father was my cousin, Daniel.”

I froze.

“What?”

“Daniel was the person my family tried to hide.”

He explained everything.

Years ago, Daniel had been involved in the same financial scandal connected to Gavin’s father.

But unlike everyone else, Daniel tried to expose the truth.

He disappeared.

My father found him.

Protected him.

And helped him start a new life.

Then came the shocking part.

Daniel and I had met once.

Before Gavin.

Before marriage.

I remembered.

A charity event.

A man who helped me when I dropped my documents.

A man whose kindness I forgot.

That man was Daniel.

But how did Mia happen?

Gavin looked away.

“Daniel died before he could tell you.”

I stared.

“Mia…”

“She was his daughter.”

The room was silent.

“Why didn’t my father tell me?”

“Because he found out after Daniel died.”

I sat down.

Everything was changing again.

Gavin whispered:

“Your father wanted to protect Mia.”

“From what?”

“From people who wanted Daniel’s information.”

I looked at him.

“People like Victor Hale?”

Gavin nodded.

And suddenly everything connected.

The affair.

The necklace.

The business.

The secrets.

They were all distractions.

The real battle was much bigger.
