Call me when you get there. I’ll keep my phone on.” PART 6 We pulled onto Linden Court at 2:31 in the afternoon. The yellow moving truck was still in my driveway. So were two police cruisers. A small cluster of neighbors stood across the street pretending not to watch. An older man with a golden retriever. A woman holding a toddler on her hip. A teenage boy with a basketball tucked under his arm. I’d lived there eleven days. I didn’t know any of their names.

This was not how I’d imagined meeting them.

Rachel parked at the curb. Before I got out, she grabbed my wrist.

“Hey.”

I looked at her.

“Whatever he says,” she said, “you don’t owe him an answer. He was younger than I’d pictured from his voice, maybe thirty-five, with close-cropped hair and the tired eyes of a man who had been standing in the sun for four hours.

“Ms. Whitaker?”

“Yes.”

“Thanks for the documents. And the messages.” He lowered his voice. “Those messages changed things. My sergeant’s on the way. We’ve got a detective who’ll want to look at that lease.”

“Where are they?”

“Inside. Your kitchen. You can stay out here.”

I thought about the woman I’d been for twenty-seven years. The one who would have stayed in the driveway. The one who would have let someone else handle it, then apologized to Mark afterward for the trouble.

“It’s my house,” I said. “I’m going in.”

The side door was propped open with one of their boxes.

KITCHEN, it said in black marker. Mark’s handwriting. I’d have known it anywhere. He’d labeled every box in every move we’d ever made in exactly the same blocky capitals.

I stepped over it.

My kitchen looked like a stranger’s. Their boxes were stacked against the wall I’d been planning to paint sage green. Vanessa’s brass lamp stood on my counter, next to my coffee maker. Mark’s leather recliner—the one he’d insisted on keeping in the divorce—sat in the middle of my living room, angled toward the television they’d mounted on a stand in front of my fireplace.

They’d been here four hours, and they’d already arranged the furniture.

Mark was sitting at my kitchen table.

Vanessa was standing by the window with her arms crossed.

A second officer, a woman with a ponytail and a notepad, stood near the hallway.

Mark looked up when I walked in.

And then he smiled.

That smile. Can we please talk about this like adults?”

I didn’t answer.

“Look,” he said, standing up. “I know this is a shock. I know you’re emotional. You can explain it to them.”

For one second, something flickered across his face.

Then the smile came back, a little thinner.

“What messages?”

Officer Hale stepped forward. “Mr. Whitaker, we’ve been provided with text messages between you and Ms. Whitaker’s daughter, and between you and your wife, discussing this property.
