I thought you two were finally being nice to each other.”

I looked out the window.

I thought about Lauren at eight years old, standing in the doorway of our bedroom while Mark and I argued in hushed voices. Lauren at twelve, bringing me a cup of tea after Mark slammed the front door and drove off. Lauren at sixteen, asking me in the car one day, “Why do you always say sorry to Dad when he’s the one who was mean?”

I’d told her I didn’t know what she meant.

She’d known exactly what she meant.

And somewhere along the way, she’d learned the same lesson I had. Vanessa wants to see it. She loves those old maple trees.

And then, buried in the middle of a long thread, a message that wasn’t to Lauren at all.

It was a screenshot Lauren had accidentally captured. A group text Mark had once added her to by mistake, back in September, and quickly removed her from. She’d never even noticed it.

It was between Mark and Vanessa.

Mark: Closing is Oct 1. She’ll be at Rachel’s for the long weekend on the 10th. Laur says she always goes for Rachel’s birthday.

Vanessa: And you’re sure about the lease thing?

Mark: Trust me.
