That’s something.” Rick’s mustache twitched. He nodded. Once. And stepped back. I had the strangest feeling standing there. I’d been angry for over an hour. Holding it like a hot coal in my chest. I’d been planning what I’d say to that teller. What I’d say to Tom. What I’d write in an online review.

And now, the anger just went out of me. Like air out of a tire. I looked around at those eleven chastened bank employees. And the cracked, careful humanity of the whole thing hit me all at once. They weren’t villains. They were just people who’d forgotten to look. I thought about Brittany. Pale in her lanyard. Walking out through those glass doors. My mom cleaned offices. I thought about how fast we judge people. And how fast we get judged. And how rarely anybody gets to stand in a lobby and have it explained to them.

“Grandpa,” I whispered. “Can I ask you something?”

“Mm.”

“Are you mad?”

He thought about it. Between the two of them, I’ve put it together.

She’d been up all night.

She’d rehearsed a resignation speech. Then an apology. Then a defense. Then all three again.

She showed up in a plain gray blouse. No lanyard. No charms. Her perfect nails were bitten down to the quick.

She sat down across from Tom’s oak desk, in the light of that green banker’s lamp.

“I’d like to resign,” she said. “Before you tell me to.”

“I’m not going to tell you to, Brittany.”

She blinked.

“What?”

“I’ve been president of this bank for twenty-two years,” Tom said. “I’ve fired seventeen people. A veteran teller named Dolores Wendt. Sixty-two years old. Reading glasses on a beaded chain. Thirty-one years at that bank.

For those ninety days, Brittany’s only job was to listen.

To sit at Dolores’s elbow. Learn every regular customer’s name. And go down to the vault and pull out the old paper ledgers. And read about the people who built that town.

She read about Grandpa.

She told me later it took her an entire afternoon, hunched over a brittle old ledger from 1974. Reading one single line. In Walter Callahan’s tidy, upright handwriting.

E. Doyle. Collateral, north quarter. Never missed a payment. Never asked for thanks.

“I cried in the vault,” she told me. “Dolores found me down there. She didn’t say a word. He just nodded at the other rocking chair.

She walked up the steps and sat down. She set the pie on her knees.

It was apple. With a lattice crust on top.
