The recording crackled. Then Daniel said a name. My own name. Not because I was the woman he meant. Because he’d been instructed to report on me. Alvarez stopped the recording. “Someone has been monitoring your family for longer than we thought.” I couldn’t speak. Then she showed me a list of phone numbers recovered from Daniel’s phone. One number appeared repeatedly.

It belonged to a woman who had worked in the office handling David’s accident paperwork. Her name was Rebecca Shaw. I knew her. She’d called me three years earlier to confirm details about David’s vehicle and arrange for me to collect his personal belongings. She’d spoken gently, sent a condolence card, and told me the department would answer any questions I had. I had thanked her. I had trusted her.

And now her number appeared in the records of the man who had hidden a tracking device on my child. “Where is she?” I asked. “She’s been located,” Alvarez said. “We’re bringing her in.” The interview took place the next morning. Rebecca entered the room wearing a gray cardigan, carrying a handbag, and looking as though she’d been called in to clarify a minor clerical error. When she saw me, she stopped. For a moment, neither of us spoke.
