I don’t think you do.” He fell silent. I continued, “Did you tell her I was staying with her out of obligation?” “I never used those words.” “Did you suggest it?”

He took a breath. “I may have said that you were committed to the marriage because of your responsibilities to both families.” I stared at the rain-darkened glass. “Get to the office. I want every communication between your office and Alina, her family, and the hospital. Every email, every message, every note. I want the original records, not a summary.” “Dante, I think you’re overreacting.” “Then this should be easy to clear up.” “Of course.” “And whether Adrian’s greatest skill had been solving my problems—or convincing me that I didn’t need to look closely at how he solved them.

Alina was in the kitchen when I returned to the house.

She stood beside the counter in a pale sweater, her hair tied loosely at the nape of her neck.

A pot of coffee steamed beside two cups.

She looked up when I entered.

“Good morning.”

Her voice was calm.

Too calm.

“Good morning.”

She glanced at the papers in my hand.

For a moment, her thought it meant.

Because I had spent three years making decisions for both of us while convincing myself I was protecting you.

Instead, I said, “I think we need to talk.”

She looked at the clock.

“Of course.

Do you have time now?”

The question nearly broke me.

Even now, she was asking whether I could spare time for my own marriage.

“Yes,” I said.

“I have all the time we need.”

She set down the coffee spoon.

“What is this about?”

I looked at her.

“The hospital.”

Her expression changed.

Not dramatically.

She did not gasp or cover her mouth.

She simply became very still.

“What about it?”

“I spoke to your mother.”

Alina closed her eyes.

“I asked her not to tell you.”

“She something we need to discuss.”

“Yes, it is.”

“No.”

Her voice was sharper than I had ever heard it.

She turned back toward me.

“Please don’t do this because you’re worried about me.

I don’t want you to feel responsible.”

“I’m not trying to take responsibility for your medical history.

I’m trying to understand why my wife believes I don’t want a future with her.”

Her eyes filled with tears.

“You never said you you didn’t want them.”

“I thought you knew I couldn’t have them.”

We stared at each other.

Then she whispered, “Your office told me.”

I drew a slow breath.

“Adrian spoke to you.”

She nodded.

“He came to the house after I was discharged.

He said you were overwhelmed.

He said you didn’t want me to feel obligated to pursue treatment or risk another operation because of an heir.”

“I said I never wanted you to feel pressured.”

“I know.”

“Alina, I did not know what the specialist had written.

I never received your report.”

She stared at me.

“What?”

“I never saw it.”

Her lips parted, but no words came.

I continued, “Your mother says the specialist did not tell you that pregnancy was impossible.

He said it might be possible with further evaluation and careful monitoring.

No promises.

No guarantees.

But not impossible.”

Alina gripped the counter.

“He told me there was damage.”

“There was.

That doesn’t mean he told you what you believed he did.”

“I was there.”

“I know.”

“He explained the risks.”

“I know.”

She shook her head.

“You weren’t there, Dante.

You don’t understand what it was like.”

“You’re right.

I wasn’t there.

And I should have been.”

Her eyes flashed.

“You were in New York.”

“I know.”

“You were negotiating the acquisition.

You told me you couldn’t leave because the deal was too important.”

I had no defense.

The acquisition had been important.

It had secured a critical manufacturing partnership and protected thousands of jobs across several companies.

But I had not been unable to leave.

I had chosen not to.

“I should have come,” I said.

She looked at me as if she had never expected to hear those words.

“I thought you didn’t want to see me like that.”

“Alina, I wanted to be there.

I was afraid you wouldn’t want me there.”

She let out a small, broken laugh.

“So we were both waiting for the other person to ask.”

I nodded.

“Yes.”

She covered her mouth.

For a long moment, the only sound in the kitchen was the coffee machine clicking as it cooled.

Then she whispered, “I don’t know what to do with that.”

“Neither do I.”

I moved closer, stopping before I reached her.

“I heard what you said to your mother last night.”

Her face went white.

“Dante—”

“I heard you say you loved me too much to let me stay out of pity.”

She looked away.

“I didn’t want you to hear that.”

“I know.”

“You weren’t supposed to know.”

“I know.”

She pressed her palms against her eyes.

“Please don’t make me explain it.”

“I need you to.”

She shook her head.

“You don’t understand.

I have spent three years trying not to ask anything of you.

I thought if I could make our marriage easy enough, if I never complained, if I never demanded anything, then you wouldn’t regret marrying me.”

My throat tightened.

“Alina, I have never regretted marrying you.”

She lowered her hands.

“You’ve never told me you love me.”

The room seemed to stop.

I had said those words in my head thousands of times.

I had thought them whenever she fell asleep on the sofa waiting for me.

Whenever she left a cup of tea beside my laptop.

Whenever I returned from a trip and found her reading in the sitting room, her feet tucked beneath her.

But I had never said them aloud.

Not once.

“I thought you knew,” I whispered.

Her face crumpled.

“How could I know?”

I had no answer.

She turned away, breathing unevenly.

“I was so afraid of asking you to love me that I convinced myself I didn’t need it.

I told myself that if I was a good wife, if I made your life peaceful, if I never asked you for more than you wanted to give, then perhaps I could stay.”

She wiped her cheeks.

“But every time you walked away from me, I thought you were relieved.”

I closed my eyes.

Every time I had left the room because I feared overwhelming her, she had interpreted my retreat as rejection.

Every time she had stepped back because she was afraid to hope, I had interpreted it as indifference.

We had spent three years building a wall out of gestures neither of us knew how to explain.

“Alina,” I said, “I need you to hear something.”

She shook her head.

“I don’t know if I can.”

“You can.”

She looked at me.

“I love you.”

The words came out rougher than I expected.

I had imagined saying them in a thousand perfect moments.

A candlelit dinner.

A quiet holiday.

A morning when she was smiling and I was certain she would smile back.

Instead, I said them in our kitchen, beside a pot of cooling coffee and twenty-seven unsigned pages of divorce papers.

“I love you,” I repeated.

“I have loved you for longer than I know how to explain.

I thought you didn’t want me.

I thought my feelings would frighten you or make you feel trapped.

So I kept them to myself.”

Her eyes filled again.

“Why?”

“Because I’m a coward when it comes to you.”

She stared at me.

“I can negotiate with people who hate me.

I can stand in front of a room full of investors and tell them their entire business strategy is wrong.

I can make decisions that affect thousands of employees.”

I swallowed.

“But when it comes to telling you that I need you, I become a man who can’t open his mouth.”

A tear slipped down her cheek.

“I didn’t know.”

“I know.”

She looked at the divorce papers.

“Then why did you prepare those?”

I had expected the question.

Still, it hurt.

“Because I convinced myself that leaving you would be an act of kindness.

I thought you were unhappy, and I thought I was keeping you in a marriage you never wanted.”

“I never wanted to leave you.”

“I know that now.”

She shook her head.

“No.

You know what you heard.

You don’t know everything.”

She walked to the table and sat down.

For a moment, I thought she was going to tell me she wanted the divorce anyway.

<a
