When I asked whether she knew who I was, she had smiled. “Of course. My father has spent the last six months telling me about you.” “And what has he told you?” “That you’re impossible to impress, intolerant of incompetence, and secretly very lonely.”

I had nearly choked on my water. “Your father said that?” “No. My mother did.” “And you believe her?” Alina had considered the question. “I think people who spend their lives being useful to everyone else sometimes forget how to be loved when they aren’t doing anything.” I had laughed then, assuming she was speaking generally. Now I remembered how her eyes had rested on mine for a moment too long. Perhaps she had recognized something in me that I had spent years hiding. Our courtship had been brief.

Our families wanted the marriage completed before the end of the financial year, and neither of us had objected.

We discussed practical matters.

Where we would live.

How we would manage our schedules.

What each family expected from the arrangement.

I had told her she would never be required to perform affection for the benefit of my investors.

She had looked relieved.

“I wouldn’t know how to do that convincingly,” she had said.

I thought she meant she wasn’t a romantic person.

Now I wondered whether she had been afraid of loving a man who might never love her back.

Our wedding had been beautiful, expensive, and strangely quiet.

When the officiant told me to kiss my bride, I had hesitated for a fraction of a second because I didn’t want to frighten her with too much enthusiasm.

Alina noticed.

She leaned toward me and whispered, “You can kiss me, Dante.

I’m not made of glass.”

I had kissed her gently.

She had closed her eyes.

For one second, she leaned into me.

Then she stepped back.

I had spent three years remembering the step backward.

I had never allowed myself to remember the moment she leaned forward.

At seven the following morning, I called Sofia.

She answered after the third ring.

“Dante?”

“I’m sorry to call so early.”

“Is Alina all right?”

“I think so.

She’s asleep.”

A pause.

Then she said, “Did you hear us last night?”

I closed my eyes.

“Yes.”

She exhaled slowly.

“I thought you might have.”

“I need to understand what you meant about the hospital records.”

Sofia was silent long enough that I began to fear she would refuse to speak.

Finally, she said, “I think you need to hear it from Alina.”

“I will.

But first I need to know whether she’s been carrying something alone that she shouldn’t have had to carry.”

“She’s been carrying too much for a long time.”

“Was she told she couldn’t have children?”

“Yes.”

“By whom?”

“By a doctor who should never have spoken with such certainty.”

I rose from my chair.

“What does that mean?”

“It means the injury she suffered was serious.

It means there were complications.

It means the doctor explained the risks of future pregnancy in a way that Alina understood as a permanent sentence.”

“And what did the specialist say?”

Sofia’s voice softened.

“That there was a possibility she could conceive.

That she would need further evaluation, careful monitoring, and possibly treatment.

That no one could promise her anything—but no one could tell her that motherhood was impossible, either.”

I stared out the window.

“Why wasn’t I told?”

“Alina believed you knew.”

“What?”

“She believed the hospital had sent the report to you because you were listed as her emergency contact.

She thought you had read it and chosen not to discuss it.”

I felt the air leave my lungs.

“I never saw any report.”

“I know that now.”

“How?”

“Because last month, I asked her to bring me the records.

I wanted to understand why she was still speaking as though the doctor had given her no hope.

That’s when we discovered that the report she remembered was not the final specialist’s assessment.”

My thoughts raced.

“Who handled the records?”

“The hospital’s patient liaison office.

Alina was exhausted and medicated.

She signed several forms without understanding what was being sent where.”

I gripped the edge of my desk.

“Was the report sent to my office?”

“No.

Not according to the hospital’s current records.”

“Then why did she think I knew?”

Sofia sighed.

“Because someone told her you had already been informed.”

I went still.

“Who?”

“I don’t know.”

“You must have some idea.”

“I have a suspicion, Dante, but I don’t want to accuse anyone without proof.”

“Tell me.”

She paused.

Then she said, “Your chief of staff contacted Alina shortly after she was discharged.

He told her that you were overwhelmed by the situation and that you wanted her to make any decisions about her medical future privately.”

My stomach tightened.

“Adrian?”

“Yes.”

Adrian Voss had been my chief of staff for nearly a decade.

He handled my schedule, managed sensitive negotiations, and screened the endless stream of people who wanted access to my time.

I trusted him with everything from corporate acquisitions to personal security.

“What exactly did he say?”

“He told her you had asked him to make sure she wasn’t pressured into discussing children.

He said you would never ask her to undergo treatments or put herself through anything painful for the sake of an heir.”

I stared at the wall.

It sounded like something I might have said.

I had, in fact, told Adrian that Alina should never feel pressured to provide an heir.

But I had never told him to speak to her privately.

I had never told him to suggest that I didn’t want children.

And I had never seen her medical report.

“Did Alina tell you this at the time?”

“She didn’t want to repeat the conversation.

She thought she was protecting you from disappointment.”

“By making herself believe I pitied her?”

“By making herself believe you were staying because you were too kind to leave.”

I pressed my fingers against my forehead.

“Why didn’t she ask me?”

“Because she loved you.”

The answer was so simple that I couldn’t respond.

Sofia continued, “She was afraid that if she asked you directly, you would have to choose between the truth and the marriage.

She thought that if she stayed quiet, you might remain happy.

She told herself that if she never asked for anything, she would never become a burden.”

I closed my eyes.

“And you let her believe that?”

“No,” Sofia said sharply.

“I tried to persuade her to speak to you.

I told her that love is not a contract in which one person must become smaller so the other can stay.

But she was frightened, and every time she tried to talk about the future, she convinced herself you would feel obligated to reassure her.”

Her voice broke.

“She wanted you to choose her freely, Dante.

Not because you had made a promise.

Not because your families had arranged it.

Not because you felt sorry for her.”

I sat down slowly.

For three years, I had believed Alina was indifferent to me.

All the while, she had been trying to protect me from a disappointment I had never expressed.

“Thank you for telling me,” I said.

“Dante?”

“Yes?”

“Please don’t go to her with anger.

She has been punishing herself for something she never deserved to carry alone.”

I looked at the divorce papers.

“I won’t.”

“And don’t promise her a child just because you’re afraid of losing her.”

The warning stopped me.

Sofia continued, “A child cannot be a bargaining chip in a marriage.

If you want children, you must be honest about that.

If she can have them, you must both decide what you want.

And if she cannot, you must decide whether your love is still enough.

She deserves a husband who will tell her the truth.”

I swallowed.

“I understand.”

“I hope you do.”

After we ended the call, I sat in silence.

Then I picked up the phone again and called Adrian.

Adrian answered on the first ring.

“Good morning, Dante.”

“Did you speak to Alina after her accident?”

A pause.

“Which conversation are you referring to?”

“The one in which you told her I didn’t want to discuss children.”

Silence.

It lasted only two seconds, but I knew Adrian well enough to hear the calculation behind it.

“Dante, I was trying to protect both of you.”

“That’s not what I asked.”

He exhaled.

“Yes.

I spoke to her.”

“Did I authorize you to do that?”

“You told me you didn’t want her to feel pressured.”

“I told you not to pressure her.

I didn’t tell you to speak on my behalf.”

“I believed the distinction was clear.”

“It wasn’t.”

“Dante, at the time, the situation was complicated.

Alina had just suffered a serious injury.

The doctors were uncertain about her recovery.

You were working eighteen-hour days, the company was facing a liquidity crisis, and your board was questioning whether your personal life was stable enough for the succession restructuring.”

I felt my jaw tighten.

“So you decided to manage my marriage for me?”

“I decided to prevent an already painful situation from becoming worse.”

“Did you tell her I had read her medical report?”

Another pause.

“I told her that your office had received the necessary information.”

“Had it?”

“I don’t know.”

“Did you check?”

“I assumed—”

“Did you check?”

“No.”

I stood and walked toward the window.

<a
