The blue folder lay on the patio table. I had read Ryan\u2019s note five times. It belonged to Mom. There were dozens of possibilities. Jewelry. Letters. Photographs. Some forgotten family heirloom. But none explained twenty-three years of secrecy. At seven fifteen, my phone rang. Melissa. Not Ryan. Then: \u201cYou found her.\u201d Not a question. \u201cYes.\u201d Melissa made a small sound. Relief or sorrow. Possibly both. \u201cIs she okay?\u201d \u201cShe\u2019s at my house.\u201d \u201cThank God.\u201d There was so much feeling in those three words that my anger toward her shifted. Not disappeared.
