Before she could take her, Ryan suddenly spoke. \u201cDon\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Everyone froze.<\/p>\n<p>The nurse looked at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSir?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDon\u2019t take her.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His voice was barely audible.<\/p>\n<p>The nurse stepped back.<\/p>\n<p>Ryan walked toward us slowly.<\/p>\n<p>He looked at the baby.<\/p>\n<p>Then at me.<\/p>\n<p>Then at Melissa.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI knew this might happen.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My heart dropped.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat do you mean you knew?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ryan said nothing.<\/p>\n<p>I stared at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou knew?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He closed his eyes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot exactly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen explain it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI can\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Something inside me snapped.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou can\u2019t?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My voice rose.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou just watched me give birth to your child, Ryan. You told me you couldn\u2019t take her home. You pointed at her back like you were looking at something horrifying, and now you\u2019re telling me you can\u2019t explain it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ryan looked down.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was afraid.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOf what?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He didn\u2019t answer.<\/p>\n<p>Melissa suddenly stepped between us.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRyan.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He looked at her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou didn\u2019t want to hurt you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou already have.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Melissa\u2019s voice broke.<\/p>\n<p>She looked at the baby.<\/p>\n<p>Then at her husband.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat does that mark mean?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ryan stared at the floor.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt means somebody knew she was coming.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The room became silent.<\/p>\n<p>I felt cold despite the warmth of the birthmark.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRyan!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He flinched.<\/p>\n<p>Then he reached into the pocket of his jacket.<\/p>\n<p>His hand trembled as he pulled out his phone.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI received something three months ago.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He unlocked the screen.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI thought it was a threat.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He handed the phone to me.<\/p>\n<p>There was a photograph.<\/p>\n<p>An old photograph.<\/p>\n<p>It showed a woman standing beside a newborn baby.<\/p>\n<p>The picture looked decades old.<\/p>\n<p>The edges were faded and damaged.<\/p>\n<p>I stared at it.<\/p>\n<p>Then my stomach dropped.<\/p>\n<p>Because the woman in the photograph looked familiar.<\/p>\n<p>Too familiar.<\/p>\n<p>I zoomed in.<\/p>\n<p>Her face was young, but there was no her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTwo nights ago.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her face went white.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou never told me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI didn\u2019t want to scare you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat happened?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNothing was stolen.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen why are you saying someone broke in?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ryan looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause they didn\u2019t take anything.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He paused.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey only went through the nursery.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Melissa stood.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ryan nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey opened the
