Sen. Rick Scott (R-Fla.) on Tuesday said President Trump will have to resume a full war with Iran days after the initial\u00a0failed ceasefire deal expired. Asked if the president should follow through on his\u00a0threat last month to \u201cbomb and destroy\u201d at least \u201cONE BRIDGE OR POWER PLANT\u201d near Tehran if the Iranian regime fired at U.S. ships in the Strait of Hormuz, Scott answered in the affirmative. \u201cI think he\u2019s going to have to,\u201d the Florida Republican told NewsNation\u2019s Blake Burman in an appearance on \u201cThe Hill.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI mean, here\u2019s a president that doesn\u2019t like war. None of us do. Here\u2019s a president that doesn\u2019t want to put troops in harm\u2019s way. None of us do,\u201d Scott continued. \u201cAnd so, he\u2019s given diplomacy a chance. Iran has walked away from it.\u201d He added that, \u201cat some point, he will not have a choice but to do more to destroy their ability to produce weapons. But they are not going to have a useful weapon while President Trump\u2019s president.\u201d The senator noted that Trump \u201chas a lot better information than I do\u201d when it comes to his next actions on Iran, but he said the president will \u201cdo everything he can with diplomacy.\u201d He suggested the Pentagon will act in the next \u201c30 days or so.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cBut do I believe this regime is going to change?\u201d he added. \u201cNo, I don\u2019t.\u201d Trump has attempted to wage\u00a0economic warfare on Iran with sanctions and the return of a naval blockade in the Strait of Hormuz, a waterway through which roughly 30 percent of the world\u2019s oil and gas is exported, while Iran has it effectively shut down for commercial vessels. The president\u00a0threatend Oman\u00a0as it has negotiated with Iran to develop a deal to set up\u00a0new shipping lanes in the strait. Esmail Baghaei, a spokesperson for the Iranian Foreign Ministry, said Monday that \u201can understanding\u201d had been reached. \u201cIf Oman gets in the way, we\u2019ll bomb the s\u2014 out of them,\u201d Trump told Fox News\u2019s Trey Yingst earlier this week. The journalist\u00a0did not provide audio\u00a0of the conversation.<\/p>\n

Iranian officials have insisted that the\u00a0strait will reopen\u00a0once Trump withdraws the naval blockade, compensates Iran for damages from the war, unfreezes assets and lifts sanctions. The Islamic Republic also\u00a0chided the president\u00a0over his proposal to\u00a0make the strait U.S. territory. Trump also told Yingst that he has \u201cno time schedule\u201d to make a new deal with Iran. Both countries previously agreed to an\u00a0interim deal in June, which expired Monday.<\/p>\n

On Tuesday, Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Qalibaf\u00a0accused Defense Secretary\u00a0Pete Hegseth\u00a0and Treasury Secretary\u00a0Scott Bessent\u00a0of being \u201cway out of their league\u201d in trying to bring Tehran back to the table for peace negotiations.
