I talk about private screening questions and documentation language. I watch tired nurses take notes during the end of long shifts. I watch residents blink hard when I describe what delayed care can look like outside textbook cases.<\/p>\n<p>At the end, I always say this:<\/p>\n<div class=\"injected-content injected-in-content injected-in-content-1\"><\/div>\n<p>\u201cIf a patient tells you they are afraid to go home, treat that sentence like a vital sign.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I believe that with everything in me.<\/p>\n<p>Because once, in a room filled with machines, a nurse treated my fear as real.<\/p>\n<p>And because he did, I lived long enough to learn that home is not the place where people claim you.<\/p>\n<p>Home is the place where your pain is believed.<\/p>\n<p>Home is the person who comes.<\/p>\n<p>Home is the room prepared before you arrive.<\/p>\n<p>Home is ginger ale on a nightstand, medication alarms, court folders, awkward first hugs, burned grilled cheese, new last names, and the steady work of being cared for until care no longer feels like a trick.<\/p>\n<p>Home, for me, began with a question.<\/p>\n<p>Do you feel safe?<\/p>\n<p>And for the first time in my life, someone stayed long enough to hear the answer.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I do not regret testifying.
