They no longer went along familiar avenues or streets of Narvarte where the car shook due to potholes or speed bumps. Now the journey was smoother, straighter, longer. As if they had left the area where they normally moved.

He tried to breathe slowly, but the air inside the trunk was getting thicker. The heat and confinement squeezed his chest. Outside you could no longer hear so many honks or vendors, but long stretches of constant engine and, from time to time, the hum of a trailer when passing.

They didn’t go to school.

They didn’t go to the office.

They didn’t go anywhere normal.

He leaned his ear against the back seat, trying to hear better. For a while he could not distinguish anything. Then Daniel’s voice, soft, too soft.

“Don’t be nervous. Today it is going to be fixed.

There was a silence.

Then Emilia’s little voice, just a thread.

“What if my mom finds out?”

Veronica’s heart pounded so hard that she thought they were going to hear it from the seats.

Daniel replied almost immediately.

“Your mother doesn’t have to find out. This is for their good as well. When it’s all over, they’re not going to have any problems.

Veronica closed her eyes.

The “everything” sounded like a threat to him.

He thought of clandestine hospitals, of people buying children, of debts, of things that were too horrible. His body asked him to hit the trunk, scream, jump on them as soon as the car braked. But another part of her—colder, clearer—told her that she still didn’t know enough. If she got out too soon and Daniel had an explanation, she would go back to being the paranoid wife, the upset mother, the crazy woman who imagines things.

They continued to advance for almost half an hour more.

Then the car slowed down. He turned twice. He entered through a gravel surface. The sound changed. Pebbles hitting the tires. Then a slight drop. The engine went out.

Veronica stopped breathing.

He heard the doors open.

Daniel’s first.

Then Emilia’s.

“Get off slowly,” he said. Remember what we practice.

We practice.

Veronica felt dizzy.

The back door closed. Daniel walked away with Emilia. His footsteps sounded on gravel and then on something hollow, perhaps a porch of wood or sheet. A metal door creaked. Distant voices. A woman waving. Then silence.

He waited.

One.

Dos.

Five minutes.

When he heard nothing nearby, he barely pushed the trunk lid. It wasn’t fully locked, just adjusted. It opened a few centimeters and a strip of light cut through the darkness.

She went out awkwardly, her legs asleep, her dress wrinkled, her hair stuck to her forehead with sweat. As he sat up, he looked around.

He did not recognize the place.

It was an old building on the outskirts of the city, perhaps an old adapted warehouse, with high walls, a gravel patio and a faded canvas where it was read, in blue letters already half erased:

Children’s Harmony Integral Center

He had to read it twice.

It was not a clandestine hospital or an abandoned house.

It was worse, because of what it hid under a respectable appearance.

White light filtered through a side window. She crouched over to the wall and looked through a crack between the metal shutters.

Inside there was a room with children’s tables, drawings pasted on the wall and two women in light pink uniforms. One of them was smiling too much. The other carried a notebook. Daniel was standing by the head table, a folder in his hand. Emilia, sitting in a blue chair, looked tiny, stiff, with her backpack still on.

“She’s a good girl,” Daniel said. Very obedient. The mother is the one who does not cooperate.

Veronica felt her fingers freeze.

The woman in uniform smiled, understanding.

Many parents are slow to accept reality. But the sooner you get into the program, the better it will be for everyone.

“I’ve already filled out the form,” Daniel replied. I also brought the evaluation they asked me for.

“Perfect. The father’s signature and initial consent are sufficient for observation of evidence. If the child shows bonds of anxious attachment and school resistance, we may recommend partial hospitalization.

Internment.

Veronica stopped feeling her legs.

The woman passed a leaf to Daniel.

—Here, where it says that the mother presents emotional instability and possible obstructive behavior.

He signed.

He signed.

The girl.

To his daughter.

And then Emilia spoke in a low voice, without raising her head.

“Am I going to sleep here today?”

Daniel bent down next to her and arranged her hair with a tenderness that disgusted Veronica.

“Only if you’re brave, princess. This is how you help mom. After that everything will be better.

The girl tightened the strap of the backpack.

“But I don’t want to.

The woman in pink intervened quickly.

“Sometimes children don’t know what’s best for them.

Veronica no longer thought.

He took out his cell phone with trembling hands and began recording through the slit. She took a video of Daniel signing, of the sheet where something like “behavioral evaluation admission” could be read, of Emilia saying that she did not want to stay, of the woman explaining the partial internment without her presence or authorization.

Then he called 911.

He did not identify himself with a long speech. He spoke clearly, quickly, with the precision of fear that has already found a target.

“My husband tries to leave my youngest daughter in a center without my consent. I have evidence. The girl does not want to stay. I think he’s falsifying documents and saying I’m unstable. I’m out of the place. I need help now.

They told him that units were on their way.

He returned to the crack.

Inside, Daniel was still talking.

“The mother works a lot. The girl is becoming a problem. He cries, resists, lies. You know what they’re like. A woman alone cannot do everything.

Veronica almost laughed.

So that was it.

Not a criminal network. Not something darker than it already was. He wanted to get rid of the hindrance. Of the girl. Of his discomfort. Of the daughter who prevented him from playing the quiet man while she worked and he decided who was left over in the house.

Anger gave him a clean lucidity.

He pushed the metal door on the side and entered.

The blow made everyone turn around.

Emilia was the first to stand up.

“Mom!

Daniel froze, as if he had seen a dead man.

“What are you doing here?” he snapped.

Veronica walked straight to the table and took her daughter by the hand.

“I’ve come to take my daughter.

The woman in the uniform stood up, tense.

“Ma’am, you can’t break in like that. We are carrying out an assessment authorized by the tutor present.

“The guardian cannot authorize any internment by hiding it from the mother and lying about my mental health,” Veronica replied. I’ve already recorded everything. The police are on their way.

The color went from his face.

Daniel tried to regain control.

“Veronica, you’re exaggerating. It is only an evaluation because Emilia has problems adapting.

Emilia has a stepfather who sneaks her out during the day to convince strangers that her mother is useless.

The girl squeezed his hand.

“Mom, I didn’t want to come.

Veronica bent down right away.

“I know, my love. I’m already here.

Daniel took a step toward them.

“Don’t fill his head. This was for their good.

“Don’t come close.

The order came out so firm that even he stopped.

The woman in uniform tried to intervene again, this time nervous.

“Maybe we can sit down and talk calmly…

CLICK HERE TO CONTINUE READING THE NEXT PART 👉 : PART 2- AFTER ALMOST TWENTY MINUTES, THE PAVEMENT CHANGED.

After almost twenty minutes, the pavement changed.
